GOVERNOR’S CARE COURT POLICY BACKED BY CHAIR FLETCHER & THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Chair Nathan Fletcher, and the Board of Supervisors voted to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s CARE Court proposal. After the vote, Chair Fletcher issues the following statement:
“CARE Court will be another helpful tool we can use to help tackle the homelessness crisis and build a better behavioral health system,” said Chair Fletcher. “CARE Court will not single handedly end these crises, but it is vital we try new approaches to tackle these longstanding challenges. I fully support Governor Gavin Newsom’s CARE Court proposal.”
The CARE Court policy Chair Fletcher and Vice Chair Vargas introduced called for the County of San Diego to actively support the Governor’s CARE Court framework that counties will have to administer when Senate Bill 1338 or another legislative vehicle passes. Their policy activates county staff to advocate for adequate funding and implementation, clearly defined eligibility standards, coordination around housing needs.
“We continue to see the need to support the mental health of our unsheltered population in San Diego county. I have dedicated nearly 30 years of my life advocating for access to quality healthcare, and CARE Court will be a viable solution that will allow us to ensure that those struggling with severe mental health and experiencing homelessness receive the treatment and services they deserve to be healthy,” said Vice Chair Vargas. “With today’s action the County will support Governor Newsom's bold and innovative vision to find solutions for this crisis impacting our communities for far too long.”
