REGIONAL FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL TO BE BUILT, SUPERVISOR FLETCHER’S POLICY IS PASSED

10/25/22

Supervisor Nathan Fletcher wants to honor the lives of fallen firefighters in San Diego County. Today, his policy to build the San Diego Regional Firefighter Memorial at Waterfront Park was approved by his colleagues, which is the first step in the process of planning and raising funds to build the Memorial.

“Firefighters in San Diego County protect lives under intense circumstances. When one of those heroes loses their life saving others, they deserve to be remembered for their sacrifice and the memorial we will build at Waterfront Park will provide that recognition,” said Supervisor Fletcher. “There’s a lot of work to do before it is built, and having the input of the firefighting community will greatly benefit this project.”

Waterfront Park is already the site of a memorial for law enforcement officers; Supervisor Fletcher’s policy calls for a memorial similar in size to that one; but it's design will be determined by a working group composed of representatives from CAL FIRE/County Fire, Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) and other entities. Supervisor Fletcher kicked-off fundraising efforts for this project by transferring $10,000 from his office’s Community Enhancement Program to DPR for initial design activities.  A separate entity for the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Foundation will also be formed to raise funds, add names to the Memorial and host an annual event honoring the lives lost.
