Chair Nathan Fletcher & BOS Pass Policy to Expand Veterans Care Coordination Program

Chair Nathan Fletcher, a Marine combat veteran, today along with the rest of the Board of Supervisors voted to increase veterans’ accessibility to essential care coordination services when reentering the community after being incarcerated.

“Individuals who served our Country to protect our freedoms are heroes, but that does not make them immune to making mistakes. It’s our obligation to help them up when they fall down,” said Chair Fletcher. “The action we took today ensures that after they have served their time, we have the right level of services available to help them build their lives back better.”   

Today’s vote by the Board of Supervisors will: 

1. Increase accessibility of the Community Care Coordination for Veterans (C3V) program to include veterans released from all Sheriff’s Department detention and reentry facilities.

2. Authorize referrals to the C3V program from all Sheriff’s Department detention and reentry facilities. 

3. Remove barriers to services including housing assistance, care coordination, vocational training and reduce reincarceration rates among Veterans.

As a Marine combat veteran, Chair Fletcher has a special connection to veterans who put their lives in danger to protect our Country. Supporting this policy is part of Chair Fletcher’s continued commitment to veterans issues, which has also included being a vocal advocate against the deportation of veterans, and actively working to bring already deported veterans home.

Providing Community Care Coordination to Veterans aligns with Chair Fletcher’s Framework for the Future of San Diego County. The Framework prioritizes communities and populations in San Diego that have been historically left behind. Through this Framework, Chair Fletcher is fighting for racial justice, health equity, economic opportunity, environmental protection, government transparency, and fundamental changes to county operations.
