County ceremony marks San Diego reopening

More than 200 people marked the reopening of San Diego County with live music and breakfast burritos at the Hall of Administration early Tuesday morning. The event celebrated a return to public life after more than a year of lockdowns amid the pandemic.

“The last year has tested us; it has tried us,” Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said. “Today we really appreciate the lifting of the tiers.”

Guests said they were happy to take part in a large group event again, noting the months of effort required to get there.

“We want to celebrate what we’ve done lowering COVID-19 rates in San Diego County,” said Eyal Oren, director of the Public Health Department at San Diego State University. “We’ve come a long way that we can have this kind of function safely.”

Fletcher said he expects local businesses will thrive as the city reopens.

“Our small businesses adapted and struggled and opened and closed,” he said. “Now they are in a position to truly roar back.” READ MORE
