Supervisor Fletcher Reflects on Chelsea's Law 10 Year Anniversary

A decade ago today, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who was then a member of the California State Assembly, secured the governor’s signature on a landmark piece of legislation to protect children from violent predators and named to honor Chelsea King, who was violently killed by a known sexually violent  predator. 

Supervisor Fletcher ten years later reflects on this important law in the following statements: 

“10 years ago today California took a major step forward in protecting our children from violent predators. Chelsea’s law was the culmination of months of daily work to build coalitions, craft policy and ultimately deliver an impactful law that continues to make a difference today,” Supervisor Fletcher said this morning. “It was the honor of my life to work with the King family to author this legislation, joining with more than 100,000 change makers whose tireless advocacy and persistence made all the difference alongside legislative leaders committed to doing the right thing.

“This is why I got into public service -- to deliver results and make a real difference,” Supervisor Fletcher concluded.

Chelsea’s Law increases punishments for people convicted of forceable sex crimes against children and required some sex offenders to be screened for future risk.  A unique part of the law is that an offender can be sentenced to life without possibility of parole for a crime other than murder.
