CHAIR NATHAN FLETCHER ISSUES STATEMENT ON INTERIM SHERIFF APPOINTMENT
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today selected Anthony Ray as Interim Sheriff for the remainder of 2022. Chair Nathan Fletcher issued the following statement after today’s selection:
“As a Board, we selected an Interim Sheriff who has demonstrated a commitment to reducing violent crime, improving the conditions in our jails, and embracing law enforcement best practices, along with a commitment to racial justice,” said Chair Fletcher. “I appreciate each candidate for their participation and look forward to working with Interim Sheriff Anthony Ray to fulfill their responsibilities to our communities, and County.”
In January after Sheriff Bill Gore announced his retirement, Chair Fletcher called for the Board of Supervisors to conduct a robust, open, and transparent selection process and only consider appointing an interim sheriff who is not a candidate for a full term in this year’s election. The county had multiple open sessions with the candidates and the public had an opportunity to answer questions and provide input. The appointment of Anthony Ray to Interim Sheriff concludes this process. Interim Sheriff Ray will serve the remainder of Bill Gore’s term until the swearing of a newly elected Sheriff in January of 2023.
