Nathan Fletcher Selected as Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors

Nathan Fletcher is now Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Today during the Board’s organizational meeting, Vice Chair Nora Vargas made the motion to nominate him for Chair and it was seconded by Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer. A 5-0 vote selected Supervisor Fletcher as Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

“I am honored to have been selected to lead the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As the new Chair of the Board, I will work tirelessly for a county with more opportunity, more fairness, more equity and more justice. Let’s make San Diego County a place where our government is open, transparent, accessible and honest. One where all voices are heard, all ideas are considered and opportunity exists for everyone,” said Chair Fletcher. 

    

During his address, Chair Fletcher outlined a new Framework for the Future of San Diego County. The Framework prioritizes communities and populations in San Diego that have been historically left behind. Through this Framework, Chair Fletcher is fighting for: racial justice, health equity, economic opportunity, environmental protection, government transparency, and fundamental changes to county operations.

As part of the transformative new direction the Board of Supervisors is taking, Chair Fletcher in the coming days will roll out several policies and initiatives that will be voted on during the January 12, 2021 Board of Supervisors meeting. Some of those policies will be in partnership with new members of the Board of Supervisors. See below for details.  

 

  • January 6, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. -- Special policy announcement with Chair Fletcher and Vice Chair Nora Vargas highlighting how race and equity impact public health. It will be hosted outside of the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101 (Pacific Highway Side of Building Near Steps)
  • January 6, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. -- Weekly COVID-19 Media Briefing. Aired on County of San Diego social media channels, and cable television   
  • January 7, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. -- Special policy announcement with Chair Fletcher and Supervisor Joel Anderson highlighting the importance of transparency and the community’s access to government.  It will be hosted outside of the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101 (Pacific Highway Side of Building Near Steps)

 

  • January 7, 2021 at 1:30 p.m.  -- Special policy media availability with Chair Fletcher about changes to the County’s legislative strategy. Details will be forthcoming 

 

  • January 8, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. -- Special policy announcement with Chair Fletcher and Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer about realigning the county’s financial policies to provide greater community investment, while being fiscally responsible. Roles and Responsibilities of the Chair

 As part of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Rules of Procedure, Chair Fletcher’s responsibilities include:

  • Lead officer of the Board of Supervisors, 
  • Serves as Chair of the Unified San Diego County Disaster Council, 
  • Propose appointments to boards, commissions, and committees 
  • Call conferences and special meetings of the Board and approves agendas,
  • Deliver the annual State of the County Address,  and 
  • Represents County at functions, events. 

 

About Chair Nathan Fletcher

Nathan Fletcher is Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As Chair, he is leading the effort to confront COVID-19 and ensure we build back better through the recovery. He is also focused on transforming our approach to behavioral health, making substantial investment in our mental health and drug treatment programs. A committed environmentalist, Chair Fletcher uses his position on the California Air Resources Board, Board of Supervisors and as Chair of the Metropolitan Transit Agency to ensure we tackle climate change and work to ensure environmental justice.
