Opinion: In addition to books, Californians can now use library cards to check out state parks



Tuesday state officials announced a new initiative allowing California residents to use library cards to borrow day passes for free access to more than 200 eligible state parks. It’s brilliant. The pass entitles the state’s 23 million library cardholders to enter eligible state parks for the day in vehicles with a capacity of nine people or less. A state interactive map shows it includes virtually all the most popular state parks within San Diego County.

This comes days after San Diego County Supervisors Board Chair Nathan Fletcher’s commitment to set up a new “Outdoor Experience Program” to provide free access and transportation to the county’s excellent park system. This inspired way of thinking about parks should boost physical and mental well-being.
