County-Supported Housing Navigation Center a Step Forward for San Diego
This month, the Housing Navigation Center opened its doors to an eager community of unsheltered residents of downtown San Diego. The Center will serve as a hub for homeless and at-risk populations in San Diego to help them access housing, high-quality health care treatment, peer support, transportation assistance, and a host of other community resources.
“It is high time that the community comes together to help our neighbors access the resources they need to get back on their feet,” said Supervisor Fletcher in response to the hundreds of individuals who have already been welcomed by the center. “The Housing Navigation Center is the first of its kind in San Diego, and I could not be more proud of the robust role that our County services play in providing healthcare, food, and shelter to families in need. Congratulations to Mayor Faulconer on his achievement in making this program a reality; I look forward to staying involved as a community partner with city officials to address our housing crisis head-on.”
The Navigation Center is served by staff from county, city, and community organizations to secure housing and support services for those who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), for example, provides on-site health services including Hepatitis A and Flu vaccinations, mental health and substance abuse screenings, and resources for communicable disease prevention.
HHSA also equips the Center with Human Services Specialists, who will accept CalWORKS, CalFresh, MediCal, and General Relief applications on-site, determine eligibility, and provide links to resources as needed. In addition, Family Services Coordinators will provide homeless families at the Center with short-term case management and link families with benefits, food and clothing resources, and emergency or transitional housing.
